Honeywell Discusses Technologies to Help Chemical Industry Comply With Federal Regulations in Chief Security Officer Magazine

A bylined article written by Honeywell Process Solution’s Global Director of Critical Infrastructure Protection, Jon Harmon, explains the links between a business’ profitability and its technology infrastructure, security operations, and compliance.  The editorial was published in Chief Security Officer (CSO) magazine.

“Technology can play a key role in easing the burden of complying with federal regulations,” said Harmon.  “Probably the most important thing for CSOs to remember in a climate heavily influenced by federal mandates is that they cannot help achieve compliance alone. This means CSOs will need to investigate technologies — including video surveillance, access control, perimeter detection and command and control — that can be integrated into a common platform for better domain awareness, improved reaction time and reduced operator training.”

Harmon added that the chemical industry’s response to the new Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS), a rigorous program designed to protect high-risk chemical facilities from attacks, provides a model for compliance with stringent federal security requirements.  It’s likely that CSOs in other industries – water treatment plants, port facilities, educational and banking facilities, among others – are or will have to deal with similar federal compliance issues, he said.
