Honeywell awarded 220 scholarships to its Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program. Teachers from 17 countries and 44 states will attend the program at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, from June 11 to June 23, 2010.
Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote was a featured speaker at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2010 Mid-Year meeting, which looked at the ability of global leaders to effectively address major challenges and make lasting, positive change.

Led by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, CGI’s Annual Meetings have brought together more than 100 current and former heads of state, 14 Nobel Peace Prize winners, hundreds of leading global CEOs, major philanthropists and foundation heads, directors of the most effective non-governmental organizations, and prominent members of the media.

At the meeting, Cote spoke about Honeywell’s commitments to corporate citizenship, sustainability, and energy efficiency and how strong employee engagement helps the company address tough challenges linked to global macro trends, such as energy, safety, and security.

“Having our 120,000 employees feel good about the place they work for when they go home at night is very important if you’re trying to have a motivated organization with people who really want to make something happen,” he said.

Honeywell’s corporate citizenship initiative, Honeywell Hometown Solutions (HHS), applies the same rigor and business tools used in the workplace to build programs that deliver quantifiable results one community, one home, one teacher, and one student at a time. HHS combines community outreach and focused leadership with financial support and employee volunteerism to address core community needs in areas where we have unique expertise: Science and Math Education, Family Safety and Security, Housing and Shelter, Habitat and Conservation, and Humanitarian Relief.

In response to the recent earthquake in Haiti, Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the philanthropic organization of Honeywell, worked in conjunction with the Los Angeles-based International relief agency Operation USA, its long-standing corporate partner, to provide use of a jet to bring essential medical aid to the post-earthquake area.

Operation USA’s immediate disaster response has focused on the most pressing medical needs due to the devastation of hospitals and medical facilities. This first shipment, which arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, contained 12,000 vials of ceftriaxone, which is a powerful antibiotic to help treat pneumonia and other bacterial illnesses, and 1,440 cut-resistant gloves to help with the ongoing rescue and rebuilding efforts.

Two medical staff from Partners In Health were also on board to assist in distributing the medical supplies. This initial delivery is part of a $1 million donation of relief supplies, which includes high-priority medical supplies, water purification chemicals, and electric generators.

In honor of Veterans Day, employees in Arizona teamed up with Rebuilding Together®, the nation’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing communities by refurbishing homes and community buildings.

In Phoenix, Arizona, approximately 50 employees completed projects at the Carl Hayden Veterans Medical Center and the Arizona State Veteran Home. At the Medical Center, volunteers built wheelchair-accessible gardens and restored a recreational courtyard. At the State Veteran Home, which provides long-term care and rehabilitation, volunteers installed an artificial lawn on a rubberized mat to make it less likely a wheelchair will tip over, and a softer landing if a fall were to occur – the number one cause of accidents in a care facility.

Honeywell volunteers have completed similar projects for veterans in Clearwater, Florida, and Greer, South Carolina. Projects were coordinated by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative.

Whether active, inactive or veteran status, Honeywell is a strong supporter of members of the U.S. Armed Forces. As a leader in the defense and security industries, Honeywell is constantly working to improve the capabilities of the U.S. military through research and innovation. From developing integrated cockpits to ballistic-resistant vests and armored vehicles, Honeywell is dedicated to creating environments where U.S. troops are safer and more secure.

Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together®, broke a Honeywell record by rehabilitating 30 homes and nonprofit facilities across 14 states this spring. Employee involvement was also at an all-time high with more than 1,200 Honeywell volunteers participating this season.

Designed to help revitalize low-income neighborhoods, the Rebuilding Together program operates on two fronts. It provides housing relief to struggling homeowners who have a hard time making ends meet and must often choose between putting food on their table, paying for vital medication, and fixing a leaky roof. It also helps to renovate public facilities such as schools, hospitals, daycare centers, and other establishments of vital importance to communities.

“Promoting safe and secure housing is an issue of critical importance for Honeywell and our Rebuilding Together partnership is the centerpiece of this initiative,” said Tom Buckmaster, president, Honeywell Hometown Solutions. “It really allows us to connect with our local communities in a meaningful way and makes a positive and lasting impact on the lives of people close to us.”

Over the past two months, volunteers have completed projects in major U.S. cities including Seattle, Washington; Baltimore, Maryland; and Houston, Texas. Employees have also helped the program expand beyond U.S. borders. A group of employees in Mexicali, Mexico, recently completed the largest project in Honeywell’s history with more than 200 volunteers from three different businesses working to revitalize an elementary school attended by 2,000 students.

Since the program’s inception in 2003, more than 5,000 Honeywell employees have completed more than 180 rehabilitation projects in the U.S. and Mexico.

Students of the new Honeywell United Primary School in Sichuan Province, China, invite Shane Tedjarati, president and CEO of Honeywell China and India, on stage to speak at the school’s grand opening.

Honeywell opened the first school in Sichuan Province, China, following the earthquake that devastated the region nearly a year ago on May 12, 2008. Honeywell, company employees and the non-profit humanitarian organization Operation USA rebuilt and designed the school to provide up to 350 schoolchildren from seven neighboring villages with a safe, secure, energy efficient and environmentally-friendly facility.

The new Honeywell United Primary School is installed with a Honeywell closed circuit TV system, alarm systems, access control systems and smoke detectors. Roofing materials that provide better insulation to keep the school cool during summers and warm during winters were also used, as well as energy-saving lighting, switches and solar water heaters. In addition, a Honeywell whole-house water pre-filtration system was installed to provide clean, clear water to the school. Honeywell is also partnering with Safe Kids China to provide lessons to develop a culture of safety in the school.

“Honeywell’s post-quake efforts do not end with just the opening of one school. There is still plenty to do for the Sichuan people to help them on their journey to recovery,” said Shane Tedjarati, president and CEO of Honeywell China and India. “I am delighted that we have built the Honeywell United Primary School to be equipped with modern equipment such as personal computers and with a safer, more secure and more energy efficient infrastructure.”

Honeywell and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) announced the winners of the fourth annual Got 2B Safe! Awards Program that recognizes teachers committed to keeping children safer from abduction and sexual exploitation. This year, the program honors 105 teachers from 32 states, including five Grand Prize winners that have created effective techniques to teach children the important safety rules in the Got 2B Safe! program.

“Honeywell has a long standing commitment to family safety and security. With Got 2B Safe! we are helping to protect our nation’s children from abduction and exploitation,” said Tom Buckmaster, president, Honeywell Hometown Solutions. “We are thrilled to honor these teachers for their efforts to provide life-saving lessons to their students and bringing vital awareness to such an important issue.”

Though many are recovered quickly, the U.S. Department of Justice reports that 797,500 children were reported missing during a one year period of time. That results in an average of 2,185 children reported missing each day. These numbers highlight the need for increased child safety programming in our schools.

In 2003, Honeywell and NCMEC created the Got 2B Safe! program to arm teachers, parents and children with vital child safety skills. This year, five Grand Prize winners will receive a free eco-classroom makeover from the national design firm, DesignCentrix, valued at $10,000, and 100 First Prize winners will receive $500 worth of school supplies. To enter, teachers submitted a lesson plan or essay demonstrating how they taught the Got 2B Safe! Four Rules of Safety.

The Honeywell-Nobel Initiative brought Professor Theodor W. Hänsch, the 2005 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to the Czech Technical University in Prague for two days of high-impact interactions with students and faculty. Professor Hänsch also delivered a lecture highlighting his research with laser light titled “Passion for Precision” to an audience of more than 350 people.

Andreas Kramvis, president and CEO of Honeywell Specialty Materials, represented Honeywell at the event, and the Honeywell Traveling Technology Experience, a mobile technology exhibition, helped attendees learn more about Honeywell’s products.

The Honeywell-Nobel Initiative combines on-campus events with interactive Web content and broadcast programming designed to link one generation of leading scientists with the development of the next.

For more information, visit the Honeywell-Nobel Interactive Studio, which hosts all lectures from previous events, Podcasts from Nobel Prize winners that offer insights into their award-winning discoveries, and advice about how education can help students achieve their goals.
