Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote was a featured speaker at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2010 Mid-Year meeting, which looked at the ability of global leaders to effectively address major challenges and make lasting, positive change.

Led by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, CGI’s Annual Meetings have brought together more than 100 current and former heads of state, 14 Nobel Peace Prize winners, hundreds of leading global CEOs, major philanthropists and foundation heads, directors of the most effective non-governmental organizations, and prominent members of the media.

At the meeting, Cote spoke about Honeywell’s commitments to corporate citizenship, sustainability, and energy efficiency and how strong employee engagement helps the company address tough challenges linked to global macro trends, such as energy, safety, and security.

“Having our 120,000 employees feel good about the place they work for when they go home at night is very important if you’re trying to have a motivated organization with people who really want to make something happen,” he said. 

Honeywell’s corporate citizenship initiative, Honeywell Hometown Solutions (HHS), applies the same rigor and business tools used in the workplace to build programs that deliver quantifiable results one community, one home, one teacher, and one student at a time.  HHS combines community outreach and focused leadership with financial support and employee volunteerism to address core community needs in areas where we have unique expertise: Science and Math Education, Family Safety and Security, Housing and Shelter, Habitat and Conservation, and Humanitarian Relief.

Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote (seated far right) spoke today at “The Politics of Climate Change,” a Policy Network Conference, at the London School of Economics and Political Science. 

Speaking to more than 300 executives, academics, policy makers, members of the media, and politicians, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Cote discussed climate change-related business trends and Honeywell’s growing role in the European and U.S. energy efficiency markets.

“While adoption and the individual savings contribution of these technologies will differ by region, the overall forecasted energy savings is 15-20% for both the U.S. and Europe,” said Cote. 

Cote discussed the impediments and solutions to using energy efficient technologies, including a call for governments worldwide to uncover more ways to curb energy consumption while creating incentives that support energy and economic security.

“Reducing energy intensity while improving energy and economic security is a huge issue,” said Cote.  “We won’t get there unless we address the behaviors inherent in the system.  It is all very doable, we just have to get started.”

Many organizations, including schools, universities and municipalities, have made a commitment to become carbon neutral or significantly cut GHG emissions. However, few have the expertise or resources needed to catalog current emissions — the cornerstone of effective programs. The GHG Inventory creates a baseline by using industry-standard tools to measure emissions attributed to all operations of an organization, compiling data from more than 200 possible sources. The findings, presented in a GHG Emissions Report, provide a detailed starting point for launching or validating green initiatives. Having a precise baseline is also essential for organizations that intend to access revenue streams associated with emissions trading.

“Many organizations are trying to improve sustainability, but it’s difficult to make changes without fully understanding the areas that need to be addressed,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “The GHG Inventory removes ambiguity by collecting and measuring data from a myriad of sources. Plus, the results come from an organization with decades of energy and sustainability experience.”

Since the 1980s, Honeywell has completed more than 5,000 energy-efficiency projects in facilities across the globe. It also has helped 5 million homeowners decrease their energy use through our work with utilities. These projects are expected to deliver more than $5 billion in energy and operational savings.

Overall, nearly 50 percent of Honeywell’s product portfolio company-wide is linked to energy efficiency. The company estimates the global economy could operate on 10 to 25 percent less energy by using today’s existing Honeywell technologies.

The latest McKinsey and Company research has found that using commercially-available technologies could dramatically cut global greenhouse gas emissions and, in many cases, provide savings to consumers. The study was co-sponsored by Honeywell and nine other energy, automotive, technology and environmental companies.

The groundbreaking report, titled “Pathways to a Low-Carbon Economy,” outlines more than 200 opportunities across 10 sectors and 21 regions to cut global greenhouse gas emissions. These opportunities could cut global greenhouse gas emissions by about 35 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. That would be enough to put the world on track to keep the global average temperature from rising above 2 degrees Celsius (3.5 degrees Fahrenheit), which experts say is the dangerous threshold to avoid global warming and the negative effects of climate change.     

Specifically, the study found three major opportunities to reduce greenhouse gases:

• Energy Efficiency – improving energy efficiency of vehicles, buildings and industrial equipment
• Low-carbon energy supply – biofuels, wind, solar, nuclear, hydro power and carbon capture and storage (clean coal)
• Terrestrial carbon (forestry & agriculture)

Nearly 50 percent of Honeywell’s product portfolio company-wide is linked to energy efficiency and renewable energy. Simply by using the Honeywell technologies available in the marketplace today, the U.S. alone could reduce energy demand by 15 to 20 percent and play a key role in curbing and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

During the ceremony, the entire HEM site was honored for sponsoring the Bus Pass Program, which encourages employees to use public methods of transportation. The Spokane plant increased employee participation in the program by 300 percent in 2007. In addition, the site’s Honeywell Employee Trip Reduction Team was honored as the 2008 All-Star Team for Spokane County, and Tim Gossler, the plant’s environmental technician, was recognized as the All-Star Coach for September 2008.
