Honeywell’s variable geometry turbo (VGT) technology was featured on the Audi R15 TDI at 24 Hours of Le Mans, helping Audi claim a clean sweep of the podium stand (first, second, and third place), while breaking the distance record for the race.

The victorious Audi team of Timo Bernhard (Germany), Romain Dumas (France), and Mike Rockenfeller (Germany), completed a total of 397 laps in the 24 hours, covering a record-breaking distance of 5,410 kilometers. 

Honeywell has partnered with Audi Motorsport for the past three years to integrate its variable geometry turbo technology into all of Audi’s R15 TDI V10 Le Mans car engines in order to increase engine efficiency. This year, they were able to increase efficiency 20 percent over Audi’s previous (and larger) Le Mans engine model (Audi R10 V12 TDI). Variable geometry turbochargers are standard in all Audi TDI engines in production vehicles.

VGT turbos help optimize power-efficiency by using moveable vanes around the turbine inlet to match turbo boost precisely to the needs of the engine. At lower engine speeds, the variable nozzle turbine vanes close to restrict the exhaust air flow through the turbine, thereby increasing turbine power and boost pressure. At higher engine speeds, the moveable vanes open to maximize the exhaust gas flow, thereby avoiding turbo over-speed and maintaining the required boost pressure.

More than 300 of Honeywell’s key customers, partners, leaders, and employees attended Honeywell China’s Technology Day, an opportunity for visitors to learn about the company’s great positions in good industries and differentiated technologies.

Honeywell’s products and solutions related to building and industrial controls, energy efficiency and generation, turbocharging, and aerospace were exhibited and interacted with at the event.

Shane Tedjarati, President and CEO of Honeywell China and India, spoke at Technology Day and emphasized the company’s expanding global presence to bring new product development, manufacturing, and service closer to customers.

Honeywell’s guests were also invited to the Shanghai World Expo where they were introduced to the Honeywell safety, security, and energy efficiency technologies chosen to protect the properties at the World Expo 2010. A VIP tour was conducted at the USA Pavilion, where Honeywell is a sponsor and is enabling the 6,000 square meter venue to optimize energy efficient technologies for visitors’ comfort and safety.

Honeywell will launch 15 new technologies and boost more than 100 new engine platforms in 2010, confirming its position as the world’s leading turbo technology partner for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), whether for diesel and gasoline passenger cars, on-highway trucks or off-highway vehicles.

Honeywell is taking the lead in turbo technologies designed specifically for small gasoline engines (1.4L) destined for the U.S., with the breakthrough launch of GM’s Chevy Cruze – foreshadowing the emergence of a new and rapidly-growing sector expected to reach up to 4-6% penetration in all U.S. light vehicle sales by 2014.

The GM 1.4L engine is equipped with Honeywell’s latest gasoline turbocharger technology which incorporates new advances in bearing technology and aerodynamics specifically suited for small gasoline engines. 

Turbo growth is strongly linked in the U.S. to CAFE standards that require fuel economy improvements of around 40% in light vehicles by 2016. Overall, turbo penetration is expected to reach 25% by the year 2014 up from 5% in 2009, driven mostly by the growth in gasoline engine boosting.

Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote appeared on CNBC’s “Mad Money” where he talked about energy efficiency and the U.S. economy with TV show host and respected money manager, Jim Cramer.

Cramer believes the U.S., led by large corporations that provide energy-related products and supply jobs, will emerge from this economic crisis stronger than before.

“Honeywell is more profitable than anyone could have imagined it would be at this point in the business cycle and this isn’t just any old industrial company,” said Cramer. “Honeywell’s products uniquely involve the controlling and saving of energy. That’s the story here.”

Nearly 50 percent of Honeywell’s product portfolio company-wide is linked to energy efficiency and renewable energy. Simply by using the Honeywell technologies available in the marketplace today, the U.S. alone could reduce energy consumption by 15 to 20 percent and play a key role in curbing and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

“We need to be driving energy efficiency in the [U.S.] for two big reasons,” said Cote. “The first one is economic security. You get economic security by making sure that you’re as self-sufficient as possible in energy. The second one is you need low-cost power for an economy to compete, and energy efficiency is the lowest cost power you can get.”

Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote appeared on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” news program on Friday, October 30, where he discussed positive trends in the global economy and their effects on Honeywell’s great positions in good industries with host Maria Bartiromo.

“The [economic] mood is more hopeful now than I’ve seen it in awhile,” said Cote.  “The trend is clearly becoming positive.  I believe it’s going to stick and I believe you’re going to see positive numbers from here on out.”

In addition to discussing the current strength of the U.S., Chinese and Middle Eastern economies, Cote also talked about encouraging indicators in the turbo and business jet industries.

Honeywell has unveiled its groundbreaking VNT™ DualBoost turbocharger on Ford’s all-new 6.7-Liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel engine. Honeywell’s newest single turbo technology delivers turbo benefits approaching those from dual-stage configuration.

Honeywell’s industry-first VNT™ DualBoost technology extracts more performance from a single turbo package by incorporating a dual-sided compressor wheel that works in a single casing. This innovative design allows a Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT™) DualBoost turbo to drive ultra-high levels of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) in line with 2010 U.S. emissions standards while maintaining the ability to achieve higher horsepower. In addition, the variable geometry turbine’s low thermal inertia also improves after-treatment temperature management.
