Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote received the Distinguished Service Award from the Tax Foundation at its 74th Annual Dinner held in Washington, D.C.

The Tax Foundation is a nonpartisan research organization that has monitored fiscal policy at the federal, state, and local levels since 1937. Since 1941, the Tax Foundation has awarded the Distinguished Service Award to a wide range of tax professionals, elected officials, and business leaders, including Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT), House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA), Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III, Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Cote, a member of President Obama’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, has been an advocate of an American Competitiveness agenda that would alleviate the national deficit and create jobs.

“It’s important for all of us to let our politicians know that we want to compete, that we still know how, and that we just need the tools to do it,” said Cote. “By addressing debt and taxes, energy policy, math and science education, infrastructure, free trade, and tort reform we can have the tools we need to create a dynamic, fair economic environment where our country and our people can continue winning. It’s a question of do we still have the political will to do the hard things required in life? We can do it. We need government to work together and enable it. We just need the tools.”

Honeywell has been listed as a 2011 North American Top Company for Leaders, based on a study conducted by Aon Hewitt, The RBL Group, and FORTUNE magazine.

The winners were named and ranked based on criteria including strength of leadership practices and culture, examples of leader development on a global scale, impact of leadership in communities in which they operate, business performance, and company reputation.

“Honeywell hires the best, offers challenging work and competitive benefits, rewards performance, and provides leadership development tools that drive our performance-based culture,” said Mark James, Honeywell’s Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Communications. “We have a very strong executive management team and terrific bench strength, enabling us to execute seamless succession when necessary. Honeywell has a long track record of strong financial performance, through both good and bad economic times, resulting from our leaders’ commitment to delivering on both growth and productivity.”

Don Bateman, chief engineer and corporate fellow at Honeywell, is one of five inventors to receive this year’s National Medal of Technology from U.S. President Barack Obama. The recognition is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists, engineers, and inventors. Bateman is being honored as a laureate for developing and championing critical flight-safety sensors now used by aircraft worldwide, including ground proximity warning systems and wind-shear detection systems. Read more about the award.

Bateman is widely recognized in the industry as a pioneer of flight safety systems and products. Many of the technologies he first envisioned and designed proceeded through production and certification, such as the angle of attack systems, stall warning systems, ground proximity warning systems (GPWS), automatic throttle, reactive wind shear warning systems, and radar. He is the inventor or co-inventor of more than 50 U.S. patents and 90 foreign patents, and is a recipient of numerous industry awards including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the Laura Tabor Barbour Air Safety Award, Admiral Luis de Florez Safety Award, and the Flight International Aerospace Industry Personality of the Year. His dedication to aviation safety is strengthened by his personal love of flying — he has logged more than 2,200 flight hours as a private pilot.

(from left to right: Tian Min, Vice President and Chief Accountant of COMAC, and Mark Howes, President of Honeywell Aerospace’s Asia-Pacific region)

Mark Howes, President of Honeywell Aerospace’s Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, won the “Leadership Excellence Award” at the China Aerospace Laureate Awards Ceremony held at Aviation Expo 2011 in Beijing. The awards are organized by the China Aviation Media Group, China Aviation News, and Aviation Week.

Introduced in 2005, the China Aerospace Laureate Awards are considered China’s highest honor for aviation and aerospace, recognizing organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry. The awards are supported by various institutions including the government, military, enterprises, as well as the Change Foundation and Laureate Foundation.

Howes is the first non-Chinese citizen to receive the prestigious China Aerospace Laureate Award in its seven-year history. Howes’ strategic vision and firm understanding of China’s aviation industry as well as his emphasis on the need for comprehensive and cooperative partnership have resulted in Honeywell’s strong market performance, localization, and leadership in China, according to the organizers.

Howes joined Honeywell in 1980 and has led different business segments within the company. In 2007, he was named President of Honeywell Aerospace’s APAC region.

Honeywell emerged as the “Overall Best Brand of Programmable Thermostats” in the United States in Frost & Sullivan’s independent research, “2011 U.S. Smart Appliances–A Customer Perspective on Demand-Response.”

In the survey of 1,013 U.S. homeowners, 646 owned programmable thermostats and rated various brands on several specific points. Homeowners using Honeywell programmable thermostats rated their thermostats higher than users of any other major brand.

“Honeywell users appreciate the features offered by its brand – 33 percent cite that having the ‘best features’ is their main reason for using Honeywell, compared to nine percent among users of other brands stating the same,” said Christina Alfaro, a Research Analyst with Frost & Sullivan’s Customer Research Team. “Supporting Honeywell’s overall best rating is that it rated well for other factors too, such as ease-of-use, energy efficiency, and cost savings.”

Honeywell Lonon was recently awarded the “2011 Top 10 Most Influential Brands” in both the lighting and electrical engineering categories by the China Building Materials Circulation Association, the Residential Construction Materials Institute of China and Jiaju.Sina.com, one of the most popular information portals for home and decoration in China.

The top brands were chosen based on a brand influence survey conducted by the China Building Materials Circulation Association and the Residential Construction Materials Institute of China. The survey evaluated various aspects of a company, including its branding, profitability, employee and consumer rights protection and corporate social responsibility. Honeywell Lonon stood out from more than 1,200 candidates based on consumer votes and expert evaluation.

Established in 2008 as a joint venture between Honeywell and Guangdong Lonon, Honeywell Lonon demonstrates a strong commitment to innovating low-carbon, energy-saving lighting products and integrated solutions. Honeywell Lonon LED lighting has been deployed in more than 80 Wal-Mart stores in China, and can save one million kWh for a single store on a yearly basis. As an example, the Wal-Mart Beijing Wangjing store has achieved an annual power savings of more than 15%.

Honeywell Lonon’s Ex-Or lighting control system can save 40% to 60% energy consumption for offices and up to 90% when deployed in large warehouses. At the same time, the luminance provided by Honeywell Lonon products has shown a positive effect on work efficiency.

Honeywell Lonon has also earned other prestigious awards including “China’s Well-known Trademark,” “Chinese Consumers’ Most Satisfactory Lighting Brand” and “China’s Top 10 Famous Electronics Brands.”

This new award honors the best and brightest in the automotive industry and is an opportunity for the magazine to honor automotive executives who are currently in middle and upper management and are likely to become senior and C-suite leaders.

According to the magazine, “They are the trendspotters and entrepreneurs who stand to reap the biggest rewards over the next decade; they are the individuals rising through the ranks and climbing the career ladder.”

“You’re only as good as the people who work for you,” said Abruzzese. “I strive every day to make sure the team I have is full of top talent and that I recognize and promote them so they remain challenged and motivated.”

Abruzzese was part of the inaugural group of Rising Stars and accepted his award, together with 27 other recipients, at a gala dinner held in the group’s honor at the 14th annual Automotive News Europe Congress. This event, held in Cologne, Germany, is the most important English language automotive industry conference in Europe.

Honeywell Aerospace received a Corporate Social Responsibility Supplier Recognition Program award from one of its largest customers, Bombardier Aerospace.

Guy Hachey, Bombardier Aerospace president and chief operating officer, presented the award to Rob Wilson, president of Honeywell’s Business and General Aviation business, during the Bombardier Strategic Suppliers Executive Meeting in Dorval, Quebec, Canada.

According to Bombardier executives, this award reaffirms their commitment to suppliers such as Honeywell and the overall goal of creating a high-quality, competitive, and sustainable supply chain for the future. Honeywell received the award because it operates consistently with Bombardier’s six pillars of corporate social responsibility: governing effectively, valuing employees, building responsible products, operating sustainably, engaging suppliers, and acting as a responsible citizen.

Canada-based Bombardier is a manufacturer of innovative transportation solutions including the highly successful Learjet, Challenger, and global families of business jets as well as a full line of regional aircraft.
