Honeywell introduced its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Management offering, a comprehensive portfolio of services that use ongoing measurement, monitoring and real-time emissions data to shape mitigation strategies that help customers meet sustainability goals and compliance requirements.

Many schools, universities, municipalities and other institutions have made public commitments to become carbon neutral or significantly cut GHG emissions. In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adopted new regulations in 2009 requiring certain organizations that produce more than 25,000 metric tons of GHGs, through stationary combustion sources such as heating systems in particular, to monitor and measure emissions. Other regulations adopted by EPA this year may require GHG controls under the Clean Air Act, which will create additional incentives to carefully track emissions.

To help address these needs, the GHG Emissions Management service encompasses the whole emissions management cycle, including emissions inventories, audits to identify reduction opportunities, energy retrofits and implementation of renewable technologies, ongoing monitoring and reporting, and carbon monetization.

Honeywell is a global leader in energy and environmental services, working with organizations to conserve energy, optimize building operations and leverage renewable energy sources. Since the 1980s, the company has completed more than 5,000 energy-efficiency projects in facilities across the globe that are expected to deliver nearly $5 billion in savings.

Overall, nearly 50 percent of Honeywell’s product portfolio company-wide is linked to energy efficiency. The company estimates the United States could reduce its energy consumption 20 to 25 percent by immediately and comprehensively adopting existing Honeywell technologies.

For more information, read the press release.

Honeywell’s technologies related to Air Traffic Management, including navigation, guidance, communications, and surveillance technologies, were recently featured on FastCompany.com.

The feature story, “How Honeywell is Redesigning the Skies for Quicker, Greener, Less Painful Flying,” explains how these emerging technologies will dramatically improve Air Traffic Management systems worldwide by enabling airplanes to safely fly closer to each other while giving pilots and air traffic controllers the ability to minimize passenger discomfort and land aircraft on time.

According to the article, tarmac delays and route inefficiencies waste 11% of an airplane’s fuel burn. All of that inefficiency could be eliminated by Honeywell’s technology, says Dr. Bob Smith, Honeywell Aerospace’s Chief Technology Officer.

“The inefficiencies we have today cause damage to the environment, and they put the airlines in trouble. So what you need is to rethink how we use airspace,” said Smith. “I grew up on the Jetsons. I’m waiting for my flying car. I’m waiting for piloting to become much more natural. And, now we have the technology to do that. We’re going to be changing the way people fly and actually touch an aircraft.”

Honeywell announced it has been selected to help Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd achieve safe and efficient production at the Shah Gas Development Project, which is expected to significantly increase the Emirate’s domestic gas supply. When it reaches full production capacity in 2014, the site is expected to process some 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day. Abu Dhabi Gas Development Company Ltd is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC).

Although the Shah Gas field was discovered more than 40 years ago, dangerously high levels of hydrogen sulfide have prevented ADNOC from extracting the gas, which is critical to domestic and industrial growth in the region. To help reduce the risk of safety incidents, Honeywell is providing its Experion® Process Knowledge System® (PKS) and Safety Manager technologies, which can be integrated to give personnel a complete view of process and safety information across the site. This approach helps operators more effectively manage the safety systems throughout the plant. In addition to this core system, Honeywell will design, engineer and implement a broad array of new technologies and advanced applications that will help the plant operate as efficiently as possible from the first day of production.

Honeywell will provide its OneWireless™ industrial wireless network both inside the plant and at the gathering field well pads to track key personnel and assets during both construction and operational phases. Operations staff will be equipped with wireless gas detectors that will transmit alerts when dangerous gases are detected. They will also have Honeywell’s wireless Dolphin™ handheld and Webpad computers that will allow them to develop consistent and safe operating rounds and procedures and view and manage key control parameters.

For more information, read the press release.

Honeywell has been awarded a contract by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop mature technology for Fuel Burn Reduction and test aviation biofuels for use in Honeywell Gas Turbine Engines.

The agreement is valued at approximately $27 million over the five-year life of the agreement, cost shared with the FAA. Honeywell will use its TECH7000 turbofan test engine as the basis for its research. The TECH7000 is a turbofan technology demonstrator that is based on Honeywell’s HTF7000 propulsion engine. The five-year contract, awarded under the FAA’s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) Program, covers a 12-month base period and four 12-month option periods.

CLEEN is a joint FAA-industry program focused on reducing current levels of aircraft noise, greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel burn and advancing alternative fuels for aviation use. CLEEN will accelerate maturation of engine and airframe technologies to meet NextGen environmental goals and enable greater mobility. Fuel burn reduction technologies matured in this contract will enable higher engine cycle efficiency through increased operating pressure and turbine inlet temperature.

Honeywell’s variable geometry turbo (VGT) technology was featured on the Audi R15 TDI at 24 Hours of Le Mans, helping Audi claim a clean sweep of the podium stand (first, second, and third place), while breaking the distance record for the race.

The victorious Audi team of Timo Bernhard (Germany), Romain Dumas (France), and Mike Rockenfeller (Germany), completed a total of 397 laps in the 24 hours, covering a record-breaking distance of 5,410 kilometers.

Honeywell has partnered with Audi Motorsport for the past three years to integrate its variable geometry turbo technology into all of Audi’s R15 TDI V10 Le Mans car engines in order to increase engine efficiency. This year, they were able to increase efficiency 20 percent over Audi’s previous (and larger) Le Mans engine model (Audi R10 V12 TDI). Variable geometry turbochargers are standard in all Audi TDI engines in production vehicles.

VGT turbos help optimize power-efficiency by using moveable vanes around the turbine inlet to match turbo boost precisely to the needs of the engine. At lower engine speeds, the variable nozzle turbine vanes close to restrict the exhaust air flow through the turbine, thereby increasing turbine power and boost pressure. At higher engine speeds, the moveable vanes open to maximize the exhaust gas flow, thereby avoiding turbo over-speed and maintaining the required boost pressure.
