Chairman and CEO Dave Cote appeared on CNBC’s “Mad Money” where he talked about Honeywell’s great positions in good industries and showcased Honeywell technologies in a lively hands-on demonstration with TV show host and respected money manager, Jim Cramer.

Cramer, who was backdropped by one of Honeywell’s huge HTF7000 jet engines, said, “Honeywell is … a business, and more important, a management team, that I think can weather the downturn much better than others. Plus, 50 percent of Honeywell’s portfolio of products relate to energy efficiency. So it’s a company that is in keeping with the priorities of the Obama administration.”

Key Honeywell technologies from all four of its businesses were featured on the show. Cramer asked, “For instance, what the heck am I wearing?”

Cote replied, “That’s a bullet proof vest, the type that are used in Iraq and Afghanistan today and they’re absolutely superb. Just to give you an example,” Cote said while picking up an armor plate made with Specialty Materials’ Spectra® Fiber, “this is where an AK-47 round entered and this is where it didn’t come out. That saved a soldier’s life.” Other technologies featured included turbochargers, the T-Hawk™ Micro Air Vehicle, Total Fire Group® safety gear, and Prestige™ and UtilityPRO™ thermostats.

“One of the things we’ve wanted to do is focus a lot on the customer, understand our customer, focus on technology where we can make a difference, and invent markets, don’t just take market share, invent markets,” said Cote. Later in the interview Cote said, “If we’re not in a particular place already, and it’s too difficult to invent, we’ve learned that acquisition is a great way for us to go in. You look at gas detection, things like barcode scanning, personal protection equipment – all done through acquisitions.”

UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, has entered into an agreement with Vaperma, Inc. to jointly offer technology to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in biofuel ethanol dehydration. The two companies will offer Vaperma’s Siftek™ polymer membrane technology, which is designed to lower energy consumption for reduced operational costs and emissions in the energy-intensive ethanol production process.

Vaperma’s patented polymer membrane technology allows the separation of water vapor from other vapor compounds in a gas mixture. Energy savings are realized because the technology replaces multiple units traditionally used in the production process to achieve the same outcome. “As fuel demand and concern over climate change continue to rise, biofuels production must be profitable and sustainable, with a reduced energy footprint to make a true impact,” said Amar Anumakonda, manager of business development for UOP Renewable Energy and Chemicals. “The Vaperma solution helps to maintain the viability of ethanol and butanol from first-generation feedstock sources as well as second-generation cellulosic sources, such as corn stalks, switchgrass or other plant wastes that do not compete with the food supply.”

Honeywell has received an award from Flex Your Power, California’s statewide energy-efficiency campaign. The award is for the company’s Cool Control Plus® program, which has reduced electricity consumption for hundreds of small hotels and motels throughout the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) service area in northern and central California.

To date, the program has cut energy use by more than 25 million kilowatt- hours (kWh) – enough energy to light the Golden Gate Bridge for more than 50 years. Over the lifecycle of the measures installed, Honeywell expects to achieve energy savings of more than 375 million kWh.

The company has retrofitted more than 27,000 rooms under the program. And these upgrades have helped cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 39 million pounds. According to Pacific Gas and Electric’s carbon emissions data, this equates to removing 2,400 cars from the road each year for the life of the measures, a minimum of 10 years starting in 2009.

Many hotel and motel owners operate on shoestring budgets, and have not had the capital or staff to participate in energy-efficiency programs,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions, part of the Automation and Control Solutions business group. “Cool Control Plus removes these barriers so they can improve their efficiency and lower their utility bills. This innovative program is both fiscally and environmentally smart, which is why PG&E continues to offer it to more hotels and motels each year.”

Chairman and CEO Dave Cote introduced President Barack Obama at a media briefing after a meeting with the President and 12 other CEOs at the White House in support of the proposed U.S. Reinvestment and Recovery Plan.

“Now is not the time for our country to be timid,” Cote said. “We need to get this thing done. The business community has great confidence in our President to provide the direction and the leadership that is needed in these tough times to make it happen. But he can’t do it alone…all of us have to help. As for Honeywell, you can count on us and all of our employees to be there to help support this.”

President Obama said, “These are people who make things, who hire people. They are on the front lines in seeing the enormous problems in our economy right now. Their ideas and their concerns have helped to shape our recovery package, and I’m grateful that they’re here today to talk about why it’s so important that we act, and act swiftly, in order to get this economy back on track.”

“We are very supportive of the Reinvestment and Recovery Plan,” said Cote. “Our message would be it needs to get done fast. Getting money out fast to people who will spend it…and investment in the future of the country, whether its infrastructure, energy efficiency, math and science…all these things need to happen,” said Cote. “There are great strides that we can make in this country in energy efficiency, there are a number of solutions out there that are possible and we just need to encourage people to do it. It improves our energy security and just makes sense.”

Cote also stated that the U.S. is in desperate need of engineers, and stressed the importance of investing in math and science education.

Nearly half of Honeywell’s product portfolio is linked to energy efficiency. Simply by using the Honeywell technologies available in the marketplace today, the U.S. could reduce energy demand by 15 to 20 percent.

Honeywell has received an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) from the Department of Energy. The contract allows Honeywell to implement up to $5 billion of energy-efficiency, renewable-energy and water-conservation projects at federally owned buildings and facilities, nationally and internationally, over the next 10 years.

Honeywell received one of 16 new IDIQ ESPCs. Using ESPCs, federal agencies can pay for facility improvements through the energy savings they generate. Honeywell obtains the necessary financing and guarantees the customer savings so the work does not require an upfront investment or effect operating budgets. As a result, government agencies are able to reduce costs, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and create more efficient and comfortable facilities without additional taxpayer funding.

The contract builds on Honeywell’s nearly 30 years of experience providing strategic, effective energy solutions for the federal government, the largest energy user in the United States. This includes more than 150 ESPC projects at federal sites, which are expected to deliver $1.6 billion in guaranteed savings. These projects have also helped the DOE meet the aggressive energy and environmental goals outlined in Executive Order 13423, the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

“We’re helping the U.S. government and other organizations address the growing demand for innovative solutions that reduce energy consumption and increase efficiency,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “Honeywell has already implemented numerous federal ESPC projects that comply with the cost, delivery and savings requirements outlined by the DOE. The new contract allows us to continue this work.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 percent of the energy used in schools is wasted due to inefficient buildings, equipment and operations. This drains an estimated $1.5 billion annually from the nation’s schools, enough money to hire 30,000 teachers.

Since 2006, Honeywell has helped dozens of U.S. school districts beat the budget crunch with energy and operational savings expected to total more than $153 million. The savings are primarily achieved through energy performance contracts, which allow schools to fund facility improvements through the energy and operating savings the upgrades produce over a specified timeframe, typically 10 to 20 years. Honeywell guarantees the results so the work usually doesn’t impact budgets or require additional taxpayer dollars. Combining all active performance contracts, the company is helping hundreds of districts save nearly $372 million.

“Energy and operating costs drain money from budgets – money that would otherwise go directly toward the classroom,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “However, districts rarely have the capital to overhaul their facilities. Our programs help schools boost efficiency without a significant up-front investment.”

Honeywell works closely with schools to develop strategic plans to cut energy costs and emissions, and increase the comfort of classrooms. The company employs a mix of traditional and renewable conservation measures to that end. Examples include:

Perkins Local School District in Ohio is erecting three 20-kilowatt wind turbines to complement a variety of conventional energy-efficiency measures. The turbines will provide more than 10 percent of the electricity for the middle and high schools. And the overall program is expected to reduce expenses by more than $190,000 each year. The district used the Honeywell Renewable Energy Scorecard, a first-of-its-kind selection tool that helps pinpoint the technology with the most significant environmental and economic drivers, to identify the right green solution for their needs.

Honeywell has installed solar arrays for school districts in Dixon, Pleasanton, Poway and Riverdale, Calif. These projects are expected to save the districts millions in energy costs. They also will cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 4.3 million pounds and nitrous oxide emissions by almost 4,000 pounds. According to figures from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this is equivalent to removing more than 460 cars from the road or planting 575 acres of trees.

Honeywell has secured global rights from DuPont allowing Honeywell to sell R-422D, a replacement for R-22 in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. R-422D is a non-ozone-depleting hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant that is an efficient and cost-effective retrofit solution for replacing ozone-depleting R-22 in existing systems. Honeywell will sell R-422D under the Genetron® refrigerants brand name.

“This global agreement allows Honeywell to provide additional solutions for its customers all over the world who must meet regulatory requirements to phase-out ozone-deplete substances,” said David Diggs, global business director for the refrigerants business of Honeywell Fluorine Products.

Under the Montreal Protocol, all signatory nations have agreed to phase-out the use of ozone-depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). The European Union has aggressively implemented this change. In 2003, it banned new systems from using R-22, a HCFC refrigerant. Additionally, in 2010 the production of R-22 for refrigeration and air-conditioning applications for service of existing equipment will also be prohibited. Owners of R-22 based equipment will either need to service the equipment with recycled/reclaimed R-22, use a retro-fit fluid such as R-422D or replace the equipment. Other countries are also implementing the phase-out of R-22.

Honeywell has developed a first-of-its-kind selection tool that quickly provides customers with the data to make an informed buying decision. Unveiled at the annual Honeywell Users Group for Buildings conference, the Renewable Energy Scorecard™ analyzes the variables for any given location to pinpoint the technology with the most significant environmental and economic drivers.

“Popular technology such as wind or solar power are often the default options for renewable energy, yet in some case they offer little if any economical return,” said Devin Castleton, Energy Group consulting analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “The Honeywell Scorecard is a unique tool that can help lead organizations directly to the technologies that offer the strongest economic drivers right away, providing an optimum advantage for organizations who are not only motivated by environmental stewardship but also by economic value.”

The tool looks at six proven renewable technologies, including solar, wind, biomass and geothermal. And it provides a simple payback for each. So it not only highlights the renewable resource with the greatest potential, but also provides an accurate financial forecast derived from calculating tax implications, rebates, subsidies and other incentives.
